The use of augmented reality (AR) technology is not a new innovation, however its popularity is beginning to gain more traction specifically in the music industry. If you are unfamiliar with AR idols, they are just like any other music artist just perform virtually and sometimes through hologram personas live. One of the most popular virtual stars is Hatsune Miku who has been active since 2007. In 2019, virtual KPop girl group K/DA created by Riot Games, best known for making League of Legends, hit the stage with huge success with their track Pop/Stars. Seeing such success, SM Entertainment formed a girl group called Aespa who’s whole concept is centered around each member having their own respective AR avatars with AI brains. This means the members are able to converse, befriend, and interact with their avatars naturally. Fans have been able to experience a whole new type of concert with holograms, and a new type of promotional campaign for the artist they admire so much. With new advances in technology, entertainment will continue to evolve. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us!
