Not everyone sees themselves when they look in the media, especially when you are a minority. It’s taken far too long, but the film industry is finally starting to expand their range and reach a wider target audience, let’s talk about it.
Take for example the evolution that Disney has been going through over the years, specifically in their animated films. Starting with the introduction of Moana, and their successful release of Coco. This was just the beginning of more people being able to say, “Oh, they look like me- or I can relate to that-” which is key. Other films include Luca, Raya and The Last Dragon, and Soul. They are some of their top films, and listed under their most popular on Disney+. All for the right reasons that can’t be ignored.
Their most recent releases have been extremely successful and it’s likely due to the proper representation of the people it’s focused on. I’m sure we all are familiar with- we don’t talk about Bruno! Encanto has been their most successful film yet, the movie itself and the music, which have long ago taken the crown from Frozen in the market. Millions of people around the world have voiced their love for the film and what it means to be able to see themselves on the screen. Whether it be through the music, culture, identity or even location, Disney is taking every detail into account and it shows. Very fresh on the screen is Turning Red, with only a few days of being released has been a trending topic. A much anticipated film, that’s expected to be a huge hit (so far it is). As it tackles things such as being yourself, coming of age, and representation of minorities throughout the film.
From on screen to behind the scenes, we are absolutely loving it and can’t wait for what’s next! The film industry still has a long way to go before everyone is satisfied and feels that they are being represented, however it’s good to see those first baby steps turning into large strides.
