Stargazer (Citlali), a new large-scale sculpture by Pedro Reyes, has been placed in San Antonio. Pedro Reyes is a Mexican artist who uses sculpture, architecture, video, performance and participation.
His aims to increase individual or collective agency in social, environmental, political or educational situations. His work is widely respected and loved by many for his focus on representation of those not often seen. If you’re not familiar with his work, I encourage you to look up his work!
His latest work that was revealed yesterday, is now the heart of the River Walk, located on the river at the fork between The Shops at River center and Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, in the city of San Antonio. The sculpture depicts a seated woman holding up a marble star in between her fingers gazing at it. The uniqueness of the project is that she was made out of more than 80 pieces of Mexican volcanic stone. She sits at 16 feet tall, and is difficult to miss. This is the latest installation in the Riverwalk Public Art Garden, which includes other works Bloom and Green Spaces at Market Street.
Overall the piece was a great reveal and a beautiful addition to the city, as well new work by the skilled artist.
